Those who have seen previous "Whole Child" workshops will recognize familiar concepts such as reinforcement, extinction, NET (Natural Environment Teaching), etc. However, the application of these concepts may need to be tweaked as kids grow older, particularly for those who are not functioning well in regular education for at least one hour per day.

It may be easier to achieve the academic goals of a school or home program by teaching the individual to be proficient in the application of the goals. For example, an individual may become better at adding and subtracting on paper after he/she has had experience purchasing items regularly at a store. And for some learners, establishing the functional use of money may be more important than academic exercises for which he/she can see no purpose.

In this workshop, the presenters will:

  • Discuss differences in programming for younger vs. older learners across several critical dimensions
  • Show and describe examples of programming for older learners
  • Introduce a new assessment tool
  • Conduct at least one case study using the assessment tool
  • Problem-solve multiple programming issues with members of the audience

"Whole Child" workshops are always very interactive. They are designed with a little bit of lecture and a lot of active participation. Participants leave these workshops with ideas they can use the next day.

About the Speakers:

Teresa Grimes, MS, BCBA, has been working with children of varying exceptionalities for approximately 15 years. She has been a classroom teacher, a Local Education Agent, and a consultant. In those capacities, she has been responsible for many aspects of assessment and programming. Teresa has worked with people between the ages of 2 and 60 on modifying behaviors ranging from early learner skills to advanced academics and employment skills.

Steve Ward, MA, BCBA, has been working in the field of behavior analysis for more than 12 years. As a lead behavior analyst for a center school, Steve conducted more than 100 functional assessments and wrote behavior plans to address a wide range of behaviors. He also has worked as a consultant, where he has designed programming for a wide variety of repertoires with early to advanced learners, including the areas of self management and physical aggression.

Together, Terry and Steve form Whole Child Consulting, so named because they believe that no single behavior can be isolated from the rest of a person's repertoires. In other words, they believe in treating the "whole child."
